You’ve written and published your book, telephoned libraries to arrange an author reading, and now it is time to promote the event. Many newspapers have a list a Calendar of Upcoming Events in their print newspaper, as well as online edition. Many newspapers include submission guidelines and include an email address or online submission details.

Look at some of the existing samples for ideas on what to include in your upcoming event. Many listings are paragraphs with a bold title. It would be nice if the newspaper editor could just copy and paste your paragraph. Don’t be surprised if your description is edited. Some Events sections are free for non-profit organizations, including libraries. If you’re emailing an event, include:

Bold title, such as Author Reading at Name of Library
The book title
Author’s name
Where (name of place and address)
Time
Brief description of what will be happening
Other newspapers have an online submission process and you will need to sign in to post your special event. Here is an example of a calendar event:

Tragedy on the Twenty
Author at Smithville Library
Barbara Fanson will be doing a short reading from her new book Tragedy on the Twenty on Wed. Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Smithville Library. The historical fiction novel is based on a real-life event on Highway 20 in April 1933. Bring a friend to this free event.

At the end of your email, provide contact information for the newspaper, such as your name, title or business name, email address, and telephone number.
